At Data Heist: Unlock the Data, hosted by Data@UCI from April 3–5, students gathered to explore how data, AI and analytics can address real-world challenges. Melissa Education was proud to sponsor this year’s datathon and engage with attendees on Saturday, April 4. The Edu Team introduced enterprise-grade data tools to attendees, inspiring them to think of the possibilities when innovation is combined with trusted data.

A Strong Opening from Melissa Chief Data Officer
One of the highlights of the event was the opening ceremony, where Melissa Chief Data Officer Daniel K. Le delivered remarks that helped set the tone for the weekend. Daniel emphasized the growing importance of data literacy, the need for responsible AI implementation and the value of giving students hands-on experience with "real-world" data
His message reinforced a theme that ran throughout Data Heist: compelling ideas become truly powerful when they are built on reliable, well-structured data. For attendees, hearing directly from a data leader in the industry provided valuable insight into how analytics and data quality intersect in business decision-making.

Melissa Education on Campus
On Saturday, the Melissa Education team tabled at the event and spent the morning meeting students, answering questions and introducing attendees to the Melissa Education portal. Our team informed participants about how Melissa APIs and data sets can support academic projects in areas such as predictive modeling, machine learning, geospatial analysis and applied research.
The sponsor table also offered attendees the opportunity to collect Melissa-branded tote bags, notebooks and sticker sheets. More importantly, it provided a space for meaningful discussions on how clean, trusted data can enhance model performance and support stronger analysis.

The Data Challenge
A major part of Melissa Education’s involvement this year was hosting the “Best Use of Melissa Data Sets for AI” data challenge, which invited participants to build predictive AI models with meaningful community impact. The challenge ultimately received 10 submissions, highlighting the creativity and technical range of student builders across the event.
To recognize the most innovative use of Melissa data sets and APIs, the data challenge prize package included:
- Exclusive Melissa swag: water bottle, hat, and backpack
- $200 in Amazon gift cards total (4 x $50 gift cards)
- 40,000 Melissa credits (valued at $160) for Melissa Lookups and Cloud APIs
- An opportunity to visit the Melissa office for refreshments, a tour and mock interviews
The range of submissions reflected the energy and originality that defined Data Heist 2026. Projects explored healthcare, finance, community matching, business viability, credit risk, energy resilience, real estate and location-based analytics, showing just how broadly Melissa solutions can be applied across industries and use cases.

Winner Spotlight: BUSI
The winner of Melissa Education’s “Best Use of Melissa Data Sets for AI” challenge is BUSI by Anish Bhandarkar, Zachary Niu, Alex Misra and Vitisha Mora! The project stood out for its creative use of Melissa Consumer Demographic Data.
Designed to calculate business viability scores, BUSI’s viability score Y is evaluated for each latitude and longitude within a specified area using weighted parameters derived from Melissa’s consumer data set. By integrating LLM-driven weights with geographic APIs, BUSI determines the optimal location to open your next store.

Capturing Student Voices for the Podcast
In addition to supporting projects and the data challenge, the Melissa Education team also took time during the event to conduct quick attendee interviews for our podcast: What’s in Your Data?. These conversations gave students an opportunity to share their experiences, talk about their interests in data and reflect on their curriculum. As a thank-you for participating, interviewed attendees received Melissa hats, which added another fun and memorable touch to the day.
